RESEARCH FOCI
Bridge Infrastructure
Bridges are a critical component of the nation's infrastructure. Our team is performing research that includes numerical modeling, field testing/monitoring, and full-scale laboratory testing on bridge components and systems.
Building Structural
Systems
Buildings represent a substantial piece to the built environment. Our research team is actively conducting research on building floor systems using numerical modeling and full-scale system testing in the laboratory.
TEAM LEAD
Matthew Yarnold, PhD, PE, heads this research team with nearly 21 years of structural engineering research and design experience. He began his career at Lehigh University, receiving his BS and MS degrees. Following graduation, he accepted a position with the engineering firm Ammann & Whitney. Despite a successful career as a consultant, he returned to academia, where he completed his PhD at Drexel University. Dr. Yarnold’s passion for research and teaching led him to Tennessee Tech University. In 2017, he joined the Zachry Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University. In 2023, he moved to Auburn University as the Director of the Advanced Structural Engineering Laboratory.
Dr. Yarnold’s research interests focus on our nation’s infrastructure and the built environment. He has extensive experience with numerical research and experimental testing of structural systems (laboratory and field assessment). Dr. Yarnold has lead research projects for the National Science Foundation, American Institute of Steel Construction, American Concrete Institute, state departments of transportation, and private engineering firms.
